【原文】《論語》12.1顏淵問仁。子曰：“克己復禮為仁。一日克己復禮，天下歸仁焉。為仁由己，而由人乎哉？”顏淵曰：“請問其目。”子曰：“非禮勿視，非禮勿聽，非禮勿言，非禮勿動。”顏淵曰：“回雖不敏，請事斯語矣。”

【英譯】YenYuan said, “I beg to ask the steps of the process.” The Master replied,” Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety;speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety.” Yen Yuan then said, “Though I am deficient in intelligence and vigor, I will make it my business to practice this lesson.”

【今譯】顏淵想孔子請教“仁”，並進一步請示又和具體做法。孔子表示：不合乎禮的不去看，不合乎禮的不去聽，不合乎禮的不去說，不合乎禮的不去做。行仁的關鍵是人的主動自發。而實踐禮的要求，在具體做法上要先禁止四種不恰當的行為，如此才能將人生導引到正途上。今日的用法，常會依照當時情況將此四句拆開李艾單獨使用，此四句是常用的成語。由此可知，孔子所提出關於行仁的具體做法，同樣合乎現今社會的要求。
